- Description
- The recent re-discovery of nano-laminated, ternary transition metal borides called ‘MAB’ phases (M = transition metal, A = Al, and B = B) has allowed for an alternative candidate material for certain high-performance applications [1, 2]. The discovery of desirable MAB phase properties including near-room temperature magnetocaloric effects of Fe2AlB2 [3], high-temperature oxidation resistance of MoAlB [4], and single-layer 2D molybdenum boride sheets obtained through the chemical exfoliation of laminated compounds has resulted in an increase in research into their synthesis and properties [5]. Their layered structure consists of alternating trigonal-prismatic M6B slabs interleaved with layers of pure Al atoms, which endows them with an outstanding combination of properties reflecting both metallic and ceramic contributions [6]. Similar to the structure of the well-known MAX phases, there are strong covalent and ionic M–B bonds within the MB layers, while weaker metallic M–A bonds exist between the M layer and Al layer [7]. Moreover, Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results indicate that some MAB phases have a higher compressive strength and a lower load dependence effect than MAX phases [1, 8, 9]. To date, the MAB phases include compounds with the following structure types: M2AlB2 (space group Cmmm, M = Fe, Mn, Cr), MAlB (space group Cmcm, M = W, Mo), Cr3AlB4 (space group Immm), Cr4AlB6 (space group Cmmm), and Cr4AlB4 (space group Immm) [10].
